We recognise that it is not easy to develop a sustainable organisational strategy that safeguards the heritage and offers new opportunities for visitors, whilst balancing the books.

With a fresh eye and practical approach, we enable and facilitate strategy development and planning. We aim to be insightful, supportive and analytical. We specialise in working with governing bodies and executive teams to get to the heart of the issues and map out a clear way ahead.

Our approach to business planning is based on over 50 years combined experience of direct service delivery, advice, support and assessment. We can also draw on additional financial, retailing and catering expertise. We encourage realism and ambition, taking pride in ensuring that the plans we produce are a succinct summary of the current situation and an accurate reflection of what’s possible.

Our project planning expertise has depth and breadth. We can not only help our clients to plan for a finite capital project, but make a positive difference to their organisation long-term. Our work frequently involves significant partnership development, with a focus on generating a consensus across disparate institutions on aims, objectives, outputs and outcomes. We also offer a life cycle approach to project planning from concept stage through to delivery and evaluation, such as at Quarr Abbey.

We often develop business and project plans in the context of emerging National Lottery Heritage Fund applications.

Client: Sandys Row Synagogue

  • Sandys Row Synagogue (SRS), based in Spitalfields in the East End of London, is the oldest surviving Ashkenazi Synagogue in the UK and grade II* listed.
  • Through its planned heritage interpretation SRS aims to celebrate the pioneering spirit of the original founders and the many people who built the Spitalfields community based on their unique stories and interest.
  • Needed help to research and assess the development, management and funding requirements of creating a new mixed use cultural/heritage offer at SRS

Project: Securing our place at the heart of Spitalfield’s life

  • Options and feasibility review for creating a new mixed use cultural/heritage space and offer at SRS
  • Plan of action including recommendations on ‘funding ladder’ to build track record with NLHF, starting with the ‘Hidden Histories’ archive and oral history project
  • Development of plans for a new cultural and heritage centre at the synagogue
  • Pre application to NLHF for Heritage Grant for capital/service development project

How we helped

  • We undertook an options and feasibility review for the synagogue, and drew up an action plan
  • We helped SRS secure a ‘Your Heritage’ grant for a volunteer archive and oral history project to support interpretation and learning about SRS
  • We tested interest in the capital development with key partners and stakeholders and their audiences, and worked with the Board to model plans
  • We advised on the costs and feasibility of capital and service developments based on professional expertise, primary research and comparator projects
  • We submitted a NLHF pre application for a major heritage grant of £700000
