Royal College of Music Museum

Client: Royal College of Music

• The Royal College of Music Museum (RCMM) is an integral part of the Royal College of Music one of the world’s great conservatoires. The College is housed in a magnificent Victorian Grade II listed building at the heart of the Albertopolis cultural quarter of South Kensington, London. The collections are outstanding containing iconic items such as the world’s earliest example of a guitar.

Project

• The RCM’s embarked on a £36 million More Music project to redesign its public and performance spaces as the realisation of its ten-year masterplan. The Museum forms a central plank of this scheme and achieved a Round 2 HLF pass of £3.5 million in 2016.

How we helped

• CCN was contracted by Royal College to provide a package of support over a tight 6-month period to ensure the quality of the HLF R2 application.
• Our role involved development of a business plan, activity plan, and management and maintenance plan as well as ongoing expert advice, support and challenge across the development of the exhibition, interpretation, conservation and collections management elements.
• We identified important planning gaps e.g. a robust interpretation plan
• We recognised some of the key challenges where the RCMM and Design team required help both in terms of achieving excellence for the College and in terms of HLF outcomes.
• We supported the RCMM to better understand its potential market through a rigorous market analysis which was followed by a clear mapping of audiences for the business plan.
• We developed an audience development model with the team which drove changes to the activity programme both in terms of scale and scope.
• We helped the RCMM to understand the complexities and peculiarities of the HLF application process, assessment and likely monitoring and to align this properly with the wider scheme’s planning cycles.
