Plant Heritage Trust

Client: Plant Heritage Trust

Plant Heritage was formed to help minimise the risk of loss of plants across Britain and Ireland, to ensure the incredible diversity of cultivated plants, whether for food, medicine, ornament or heritage, remains available for the enjoyment and use of generations to come.
Holders of more than 600 National Plant Collections® around the UK search out and grow the widest range of their special interest plant group, identifying, documenting and conserving them in private gardens, allotments, nurseries, local parks, botanic gardens and historic estates. They are a membership organisation with a network of local groups.
They are a self-funding charitable organisation with limited resource, they raise funds from sponsors and from activities organised nationally and through enthusiastic local groups and their members.

Project:

  • To look at their current governance structure and ensure it was fit for purpose and meeting the needs of members
  • To examine their very complex and top heavy governance structure to see if it could be better designed to keep members in touch
  • To alleviate complaints from members that they felt disenfranchised and not included in decision making.
  • To reduce the amount of time a limited staff spent on servicing the governance of the organisation.

How we helped:

• Marilyn Scott worked with Trustees and staff to examine the current structure with layers of committees and complex voting procedures to simplify structures and reduce bureaucracy and give members a closer contact with decision making
• Marilyn devised a new structure working along side Trustees. This was then tested with members through focus groups and discussion. A new conference format was devised which allowed better engagement from members.
• Marilyn provided facilitation and support and helped to clarify ideas and aspirations in a friendly and non threatening environment.
• Marilyn helped Trustees to examine their membership model and review if it was still fit for purpose
• Marilyn worked with the CEO in advance of the workshops to ensure they delivered the objectives for the day and then followed up with an action plan as a follow up.
