Oxford House

Client: Oxford House

• Oxford House is a community, arts and heritage centre overlooking Weavers Fields in the East End of London. Its current vision stated in the 2016-19 Strategic Plan, is ‘Oxford House is where East London comes together to work, learn, explore and create. We celebrate arts, community and our heritage’.
• Oxford House opened in 1884 as the first Settlement House and is still at the heart of Bethnal Green as an arts and heritage space that engages the diverse communities of East London.
• It provides affordable office space for a range of community and arts organisations as well operating a multipurpose arts centre with a theatre, gallery and dance studio.

Project

‘From Victorian Gap Year to Community Hub: heritage and community at Oxford House’

• A £1.7m project to undertake urgent restoration work and open up the Victorian Chapel, roof top walk and new public spaces in the building including a new café space in the original library and refectory overlooking Weavers Fields.
• A comprehensive activities programme to engage new audiences in exploring the history of Oxford House, including its archives.

How we helped

• We researched and developed the Activities Programme including establishing partnerships with new community and arts groups, and local schools to involve them in researching the history of Oxford House and the local area at the time of its foundation.
• We undertook an archive review of archives at Oxford House and other London archives including LMA, Hackney and produced an Interpretation Plan for the whole site.
• Working with Alix Slater Consultancy and Training Ltd we supported the market analysis required to inform both the Business Plan and the Activity plan.
• We also developed the job descriptions and detailed briefs needed for the delivery of the future public programmes and activities.
