We recognise that it is not easy to develop a sustainable organisational strategy that safeguards the heritage and offers new opportunities for visitors, whilst balancing the books.

With a fresh eye and practical approach, we enable and facilitate strategy development and planning. We aim to be insightful, supportive and analytical. We specialise in working with governing bodies and executive teams to get to the heart of the issues and map out a clear way ahead.

Our approach to business planning is based on over 50 years combined experience of direct service delivery, advice, support and assessment. We can also draw on additional financial, retailing and catering expertise. We encourage realism and ambition, taking pride in ensuring that the plans we produce are a succinct summary of the current situation and an accurate reflection of what’s possible.

Our project planning expertise has depth and breadth. We can not only help our clients to plan for a finite capital project, but make a positive difference to their organisation long-term. Our work frequently involves significant partnership development, with a focus on generating a consensus across disparate institutions on aims, objectives, outputs and outcomes. We also offer a life cycle approach to project planning from concept stage through to delivery and evaluation, such as at Quarr Abbey.

We often develop business and project plans in the context of emerging National Lottery Heritage Fund applications.

Project description

Jane Austen’s House Museum is an historic site, the former home of novelist Jane Austen. It is in a constricted village setting with no dedicated car parking and no cafe. It relies on facilities in the village and the good will of the village for its continuing operation. CCN worked with the highly committed senior staff team and the Trustees to examine a new vision for the house, which helped to deal with the problem of congestion during the busy tourist season but low visitor numbers at other times of the year. We looked at options for change and income generation opportunities. We assisted Trustees in future planning. CCN facilitated a series of workshops with staff and Trustees and provided an options appraisal for future development which included acquisition of further land and the provision of cafe facilities. Of particular concern was demonstrating the value of the site to the local community and forging new partnerships.

CCN helped Trustees to prioritise activity for the next three years and helped to examine the conflict between the academic role of the house as a repository of knowledge about Austen but also to balance the need for income generation and ongoing retention of visitor numbers against a backdrop of higher visitor expectations and the need to attract the international visitor.
