We recognise that it is not easy to develop a sustainable organisational strategy that safeguards the heritage and offers new opportunities for visitors, whilst balancing the books.

With a fresh eye and practical approach, we enable and facilitate strategy development and planning. We aim to be insightful, supportive and analytical. We specialise in working with governing bodies and executive teams to get to the heart of the issues and map out a clear way ahead.

Our approach to business planning is based on over 50 years combined experience of direct service delivery, advice, support and assessment. We can also draw on additional financial, retailing and catering expertise. We encourage realism and ambition, taking pride in ensuring that the plans we produce are a succinct summary of the current situation and an accurate reflection of what’s possible.

Our project planning expertise has depth and breadth. We can not only help our clients to plan for a finite capital project, but make a positive difference to their organisation long-term. Our work frequently involves significant partnership development, with a focus on generating a consensus across disparate institutions on aims, objectives, outputs and outcomes. We also offer a life cycle approach to project planning from concept stage through to delivery and evaluation, such as at Quarr Abbey.

We often develop business and project plans in the context of emerging National Lottery Heritage Fund applications.

Project: Gods House Tower

  • With a NLHF Round 1 pass for the £2.2m project, ‘a space’ moved into the project’s development phase
  • Extension and internal capital works to re-open as a mixed use arts and heritage venue with temporary exhibition space, café, retail, bar and performance areas

  • An ambitious leap for ‘a space’ in terms of scale of operation

How we helped

  • We produced a market analysis, business plan and marketing plan in tandem with the Activity Plan [link to Activity Planning category project description for GHT] providing a coordinated professional package of support
  • Alix Slater undertook a comprehensive market analysis for the project to test what Gods House Tower would offer to what audiences and to define visitor projections to underpin the business plan
  • We researched sustainable comparator projects to ensure the business plan learnt from others
  • Marilyn Scott offered expert experience of running a sustainable cultural venue
  • We worked closely with the Trustees to shape the business plan options early on with refinement over a number of months
  • We paid particular attention to defining the right operational model for the long-term
  • With Alix Slater developing the marketing strategy we ensured that this finessed fully with the Activity Plan
  • We enjoyed being an active part of the wider project team
